Announcing the 3rd Annual K9 Kamp!

Welcome to FitDog Friday! What goes hand in hand with FitDog Friday better than our annual, exciting, super fun and healthy Koly and Kelly's K9 Kamp! Many of you have participated in the past, and we're gearing up for lots more to join in the fun this year!

What is K9Kamp? A blogging event to motivate and encourage exercise and bonding with our dogs (and yes, at least one cat has participated in the past too!)  There's no packing your bags, no traveling to Kamp--it's all done online and you can do it in your own comfort, in your own time. It's easy--we issue a fitness challenge, and you and your dog participate on your own. Then come back and blog about the results. (Open to non-bloggers too. We'll tell you how.)

When is K9Kamp? This year we're trying something new. Instead of four intense weeks with a different challenge each week, we're hosting K9Kamp a few times a year, with more time to complete one challenge. Our first K9Kamp is Friday May 31-Tuesday June 25. You'll see us all over Blogville!

What are Featured Bloggers?  Everyone can join in the fun, without signing up or any commitment. In addition, each year a dozen or so brave bloggers volunteer to commit to the challenge and share their results on their blogs through our K9Kamp blog hop.
This year, in addition to your hosts  Peggy's Pet Place and Kol's Notes we welcome these fantastic Featured Bloggers:
Small Tales- Foley Monster and Pocket
Something Wagging This Way Comes
Snoopys Dog Blog

I Just Want More Puppies

Are there prizes? You bet! Prizes for blogging and for participating, with an exciting package of leashes, toys and more worth more than $200! Stay tuned to learn more.

Are you joining K9Kamp this year? Our challenge will be announced on FitDog Friday, May 31st. Don't miss it!

Wednesday Pet Roundup- 5-16-13

Hi and welcome to Wednesday Pet Roundup! This is my mother-in-law's neighbor's dog who always greets us when we stop by to visit. Hello!!

* The American Heart Association released a statement claiming that owning a dog is linked to reduced risk of heart disease. Just one of the many perks!

* From Philly.com, two Labradors and a springer spaniel dogs are trained to detect ovarian cancer. Dogs detecting cancer is not new--other dogs can detect lung, bladder and breast cancer.

* And Fox news reports that dogs are being used to detect earthquakes in China.

* Steve Dale reports on an Illinois proposed lemon law for pets sold at pet stores.

* Contests: Still time to enter for free flea and tick comb. Enter until 5/20.
Congratulations to winners of Pawsitively Homemade dog treats: Felicia K, Heather S, and Danielle E!

Bison, yummmmm

I'm joining Tasty Tuesday today, with something really tasty...new treats for dogs from Orijen. Chewy.com asked us if we'd like to review these treats...and Kelly said yes yes yes for woof's sake!

We were asked to choose from Orijen's new Freeze Dried treats including options such as beef, duck, boar, lamb and more. We chose bison. The ingredients are:
Bison liver
Boneless bison
Bison tripe

That's it! Sounds healthy, doesn't it?
Chewy shipped the treats right over with lightning speed.

Orijen freeze dried treats are never frozen and never exposed to heat or chemicals. The ingredients are processed under the highest food safety standards. These treats are great for pets who may have allergies or other issues and are looking for a treat with a single ingredient...or just about any treat.

Kelly loved Orijen Freeze Dried Bison Treats! Because they are quality ingredients made in a quality company, I give them an A plus. Because they taste great, Kelly gives them four paws up! (You can get all varieties on chewy.com too!)

*Full Disclosure: We were provided with a free small bag of Orijen Free Range Bison Freeze Dried Dog Treats to review. This did not affect our review, and the opinions expressed here are 100% my own.

Best Flea and Tick Tool and Giveaway

It can be lurking anywhere...right in your back yard. Those awful little bugs crawling around, waiting to jump on your dog and make him itch or worse.
 Worse?
 1. Fleas not only cause itching--my vet described the discomfort of flea bites as a fiery burning pain that is beyond uncomfortable for most dogs.
2. Many dogs have allergies to fleas causing even worse reactions.
3. Most flea treatments contain strong chemicals that you have to apply to your dog's skin, which we all would like to try to avoid when possible.

4. Fleas are a nightmare to try to get rid of, requiring you to treat your whole house, bedding, rugs, furniture, etc.
5. Ticks embed in the dogs and feed on their blood and...okay just gross.
6. Many ticks carry diseases, some of which humans may get too
7. Deer ticks may carry Lyme Disease. May is National Lyme Disease awareness month. Lyme Disease is a serious condition if left undiagnosed and untreated.

How about a giveaway?
The best way to take care of flea and tick problems is to discover it quickly. Check your dog when she comes in from outside. They don't need to be playing in the woods to get fleas or ticks. Kelly and our lab before her, Hudson, both got ticks in our back yard, and they both got Lyme disease. Luckily they were treated and recovered completely. Kelly gets the Lyme vaccine and flea and tick preventative. And I also check her fur for little invaders. The Company of Animals has a handy Tick and Flea Comb, with one side to comb to pick up the tiny little flea residue and eggs. The other side has a slit designed to capture complete ticks. It's a great little tool that will be a big help. They sent us one to try out, and it's easy to use, even through all Kelly's thick fur.

Luckily, we found no fleas or ticks!

We gave away two Tick and Flea Combs on PPP Pawsitively Pets newsletter, and now we have 3 more to give away here. Enter for your chance to win!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

*Full disclaimer: We were provided with one Tick and Flea Comb to review, and 5 for giveaway. This did not affect our review, these opinions are 100% my own.

FitDog Friday- Yardwork Fail

Today is FitDog Friday, co-hosted by Peggy's Pet Place, Slimdoggy and To Dog with Love, highlighting ways we all get healthy, fit and active with our dogs!

We love involving Kelly in our activities. Last weekend we had a lot of yard work to do. What a perfect opportunity to get out and get some exercise with my dog! I was in charge of ripping out a brick walkway that we are replacing with slate.

Kelly insisted on lying down on the job....precisely where I needed to work.

Okay, well ONE of us got a decent workout!

FitDog Friday Giveaway--Link up to the blog hop, or leave a comment on this blog or one of the other two host blogs, and you'll be entered into our giveaway for one of these FitDog Friday prizes:
1. Dieting with my Dog bookmark and refrigerator magnet
2. Slimdoggy dog food scoop
3. Pruven by 3M waste bag dispenser with refill rolls and pet bandana
